Architecture in Düsseldorf's Media Harbour

In Düsseldorf's Media Harbour, at the tip of the spit of land between the commercial harbour basin and harbour basin A, the new Hafenspitze Düsseldorf was built according to the plans of SOP Architekten.

The building ensemble consists of two 65 m high glazed twin towers and a 7-storey office building. The impressive cantilevers emphasise the formally reduced design language of the buildings, which are now regarded as one of Düsseldorf's architectural flagships.

The unusual façade construction required a solid calculation of the statics and a sophisticated assembly concept from SOMMER. For the realisation of the water basin with the floor area made of glass (accessible), which is located on the plateau between the towers, SOMMER was able to score with its great know-how in the construction of special structures.

Both towers are restrained in their design with their simple formal language and the LM element façade made of primary construction (and the prefixed baffle pane as weather protection for external venetian blinds) and thus form a counterpoint to the extroverted heterogeneity of the architecture of the commercial port. A hydraulically operated steel staircase covered with stone is integrated into the stone staircase between the two towers. This is opened upwards during an event and serves as the official entrance to the ballroom. In contrast to the restrained façade design is the lavish and fashionable interior design of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, which is located in the southeast-facing tower - with a view of the old town and the commercial harbour. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the SOMMER façades certainly contribute to this extraordinary living experience.
