Since the end of 2019, renowned experts have been treating around 24,000 people who come to the University Hospital of Cologne each year for outpatient treatment with cancer on almost 14,000 square metres spread over seven floors.
The construction site will be tightly enclosed by buildings on all four sides. Due to the central location and the urgently needed expansion space for the central hospital, the building structure was designed to be very compact. It extends over the entire available plot by making maximum use of the clearance areas. This means narrow access roads and little storage space for the façade components to be assembled. SOMMER met this challenge with an assembly concept that was well thought out down to the last detail. Of course, in clinics and hospitals we pay particular attention to the surface properties of our products so that germ contamination remains low and the surfaces can be permanently cleaned hygienically.
The Centre for Integrated Oncology will house various treatment, laboratory and office rooms.
The architecture of the new therapy building, designed by a subsidiary of the University Hospital Cologne, is also intended to ensure that the often traumatised cancer patients feel as comfortable as possible. In addition to the building's appealing SOMMER exterior façade, which is designed to blend in with its surroundings in terms of colour, the new CIO has two light-filled inner courtyards, one of which is roofed over as a three-storey entrance atrium.
