The requirements for modern building envelopes are becoming increasingly complex. Sustainability and security, in particular, are key focal points. To meet these challenges, WICONA (Ulm) and SOMMER Fassadensysteme - Stahlbau - Sicherheitstechnik (Döhlau) have agreed on a strategic partnership at BAU 2025. Together, the two companies aim to implement projects that meet the highest environmental and security standards alike.
As a leading aluminum system provider, WICONA offers a wide range of sophisticated, functional, and energy-efficient facade, window, and door systems—manufactured with up to 100% end-of-life aluminum, depending on project requirements. As a pioneer in the industry, WICONA is actively driving the decarbonization of the construction sector.
SOMMER, a family-owned company with over 130 years of tradition, is internationally renowned for its expertise in building security and high-security technology. The company’s portfolio includes customized solutions for windows, doors, curtain wall systems, and element facades that meet the highest security standards—from burglary resistance (up to RC6) and bullet resistance (FB7) to blast mitigation.
With this partnership, the two companies are responding to the growing demand for sustainable and secure building envelopes. Together, they provide solutions tailored to the specific security requirements of construction projects. These solutions not only address physical threats such as explosions and gunfire but also ensure that building envelopes meet the highest environmental standards.
“Through the partnership with SOMMER, we are strategically expanding our service portfolio,” explains Ralf Seufert, Vice President Market Area North at Hydro Building Systems. “By combining our WICONA systems with SOMMER’s expertise, we can offer customized security solutions that are technically and logistically tailored to each project—manufactured using our CO₂-reduced aluminum alloy, Hydro CIRCAL.”
Oliver Sommer, Managing Director of SOMMER, also emphasizes the importance of the collaboration: “For decades, our security solutions have represented the highest level of protection. We are even more excited that they now reach a new dimension through the use of up to 100% recycled end-of-life aluminum. This partnership enables us to combine sustainability and security in an entirely new way. Architects, planners, and developers can now realize projects that not only meet the highest protection standards but also actively contribute to resource conservation. We are convinced that this synergy will enrich the market and set new industry benchmarks.”
